Part1 - Statistical highlight of IPL 2014 auction

The IPL auction for 2014 saw 178 players being bought by 8 teams.
  • Out the total budget of Rs 480 crores ($77 million) teams altogether spent 97.8% i.e. Rs 469 crores (4,69,35,00,000) ($75.5 million) were spent to buy 178 players.
  • Delhi & Bangalore spent their entire purse of Rs. 60 crores ($9.6 million)



Pareto analysis

  1. 10% of the purse was spent to buy 4 players
  2. 20% of the purse was spent to buy just 4% of players (7 players out of 178)
  3. 50% of the purse was spent to buy just 13.5 % of players (24 players out of 178)
  4. 80% of the purse was spent to buy just 33 % of players (60 players out of 178)



Average cost of each player and number of players bought

All 8 teams spent 81% of the money at an average Rs 47.45 crores (out of Rs 58.67 crores spent) to just buy 8 players on an average.


Bangalore has the highest payment disparity between its players, while Delhi has the least disparity in terms of payment for its players.
  1. Chennai bought 20 players at an average cost of Rs 2.98 crores (29,775,000) ($476,400) per player.
    • Chennai paid 81% of the money to buy/retain 7 players MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Dwayne Smith, Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo at average of Rs 6.85 crores. Excluding the 7 players, they bought rest 13 players for an average of Rs 88.9 lakh per player
  2. Bangalore bought 21 players at an average cost of Rs 2.86 crores (2,85,71,429) ($457,143) per player.
    • They paid 81% of the money to buy/retain 5 players; Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Mitchell Starc at average of Rs 9.7 crores. Excluding the 5 players, they bought rest 16 players for an average of Rs 71.9 lakh per player
  3. Mumbai bought 21 players at an average cost of Rs 2.86 crores (2,85,47,619) ($456,762) per player.
    • Mumbai paid 81% of the money to buy/retain 7 players; Rohit Sharma, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Harbhajan Singh, Michael Hussey, Corey Anderson, Ambati Rayudu at average of Rs 6.93 crores. Excluding the 7 players, they bought rest 14 players for an average of Rs 81.8 lakh per player
  4.  Kolkata bought 21 players at an average cost of Rs 2.81 crores (2,80,95,238) ($449,524) per player.
    • Kolkata paid 82% of the money to buy/retain 9 players; Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Narine, Jacques Kallis, Robin Uthappa, Piyush Chawla, Yusuf Pathan, Morne Morkel, Shakib Al Hasan, Vinay Kumar at average of Rs 5.38 crores. Excluding the 9 players, they bought rest 12 players for an average of Rs 88.3 lakh per player
  5. Delhi bought 23 players at an average cost of Rs 2.61 crores (2,60,86,957) ($417,391) per player.
    • Delhi paid 81% of the money to buy 10 players at average of Rs 4.83 crores. Excluding the 13 players, they bought rest 12 players for an average of Rs 90 lakh per player
  6. Hyderabad bought 24 players at an average cost of Rs 2.46 crores (2,45,83,333) ($393,333) per player.
    • Hyderabad paid 81% of the money to buy/retain 8 players at average of Rs 5.97 crores. Excluding the 8 players, they bought rest 16 players for an average of Rs 70.3 lakh per player
  7. Punjab bought 23 players at an average cost of Rs 2.43 crores (2,43,04,348) ($388,870) per player.
    • Punjab paid 80% of the money to buy/retain 10 players at average of Rs 4.47 crores. Excluding the 10 players, they bought rest 13 players for an average of Rs 85.7 lakh per player
  8. Rajasthan bought 25 players at an average cost of Rs 2.24 crores (2,23,80,000) ($358,080) per player.
    • Rajasthan paid 81% of the money to buy/retain 7 players at average of Rs 6.49 crores. Excluding the 7 players, they bought rest 18 players for an average of Rs 58.1 lakh per player

In terms of players from Country that has most benefited in the IPL 2014 Auction are from England, they represent 0.6% of total player sold but pocketed 1.9% of the total auction money.
At the other end is Zimbabwe, which similarly England saw 0.6% of total player sold but pocketed only 0.1% of the total auction money.
